We’re currently seeing increased activity of Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) in various parts of Elmbridge. Our Countryside Team is working to monitor and manage the situation, prioritising cases based on risk assessments. While we may not be able to respond to every report, we’re committed to tackling the issue.
About OPM
OPM caterpillars can affect oak trees and may cause mild irritation in people and animals due to their tiny hairs. These can lead to:
- Skin irritation
- Eye or throat discomfort
- Breathing issues in some cases
Simple steps to stay safe
Here’s how you can help reduce risk:
- Avoid touching OPM caterpillars, their hairs, or nests.
- Keep children and pets away from areas where OPM may be present.
- Report sightings to the Forestry Commission via the Tree Alert form.
- If nests are found on council-owned land or green spaces, please email opm@elmbridge.gov.uk.
- Find out more about the health risks. If you think you’ve come into contact with OPM, visit the NHS website, speak to your GP, or call NHS 111.
