Council Tax Support

Help to pay your Council Tax, if you are on a low income or receive benefits.

Evidence: proof you need

To apply for Council Tax Support, you will need to provide the following information for you and your partner living at the address:

  • Council Tax account number
  • National Insurance numbers
  • payslips to cover the last 2 months or, if you are self-employed, certified accounts or 1-year trading accounts
  • proof of address - utility bill
  • 1 photo ID such as a driving licence or passport, if you have not previously claimed at the same address within the last 3 years
  • capital, savings and investments (see table for evidence required)

Other evidence

You will also need to provide the following, if it applies to you or your partner:

  • evidence of other income, for example student grants or loans
  • if you are students - course dates and student exemption certificate 
  • childcare costs - childminder registration invoice or agreement
  • statutory sick pay - letter from your employer
  • for other people aged 18 and over living at your home (for example, your children): last 2 months' payslips if they are working 16 or more hours a week, or a student exemption certificate if they are students

You do not need to provide proof of benefits, pensions, credits and allowances at this stage. This may be needed when assessing your claim.

We accept copies only. If you send original documents we are unable to return these to you.
