River contamination

The issue of sewage being discharged into rivers is a concern we all share.

This may occur when rapid, heavy rainfall takes place and the waste water treatment works risk being overloaded and so valves are opened to prevent homes and businesses being backed up with sewage.

Contamination of rivers and water courses can also occur when illegal waste connections are made bypassing the sewage system.

Reporting river pollution

You can play an important role in seeking action by reporting suspected incidents of pollution direct to the Environment Agency.
