River contamination

Why river contamination occurs and how to report it.

The issue of sewage being discharged into rivers is a concern we all share.

This may occur when rapid, heavy rainfall takes place and the wastewater treatment works risk being overloaded and so valves are opened to prevent homes and businesses being backed up with sewage.

Contamination of rivers and water courses can also occur when illegal waste connections are made bypassing the sewage system.

Report river pollution

You can play an important role in seeking action by reporting suspected incidents of pollution direct to the Environment Agency.

Visit GOV.UK: report an environmental incident for more information or call 0800 80 70 60 to report an incident.
