Families across Elmbridge will soon benefit from new and improved water play facilities as work begins on three splash pad projects this autumn.
Construction is due to begin in early November at;
- Hersham Recreation Ground
- Leg O’Mutton Recreation Ground in Cobham
- Molesey Hurst Recreation Ground
The renewed splash pad at Hersham Recreation Ground will replace the existing facility, which is reaching the end of its operational life. New splash pads in Cobham and Molesey will help improve access to water play in different parts of the borough.
The new splash pads will also incorporate modern water-saving technology, including timed play features, intelligent control systems that only operate when needed, and a recirculating water system that filters, treats and reuses water rather than sending it directly to waste . These measures help reduce water consumption while ensuring children can continue to enjoy safe, high-quality water play.
The works are expected to be completed by March 2027, with testing and commissioning taking place before the splash pads will be opening for the summer.
Each splash pad will have its own distinctive theme, inspired by nature and local heritage:
- Cobham: The Journey Above. Inspired by Brooklands aviation heritage, migrating birds, wind and changing weather.
- Hersham: Ocean Adventure. Inspired by marine life, coral reefs and ocean conservation.
- Molesey: The Living Meadow. Inspired by pollinators and biodiversity, wildflower meadows and woodland habitats.
Investing in water play
The projects support our Water Play Strategy, which aims to improve access to water play across the borough, while providing modern, sustainable facilities that can be enjoyed by local families for years to come.
Cllr Simon Waugh, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Commercial Strategy said
This is a significant investment in outdoor recreation and family-friendly facilities across Elmbridge. By renewing the splash pad at Hersham and creating brand-new facilities in Cobham and Molesey, we can provide free, accessible outdoor fun for children and encourage families to spend time together in our parks and open spaces.
What to expect during construction
Visitors to the sites during construction will see temporary fencing, contractor activity and construction equipment whilst work is underway.
We will work closely with the contractors to minimise disruption wherever possible and will provide updates as the projects progress on our social media channels, in our resident’s newsletter and on our website.
Further information, including opening dates and details of the new splash pads, will be shared closer to completion.
