Take control of your exposure to polluted air

On Clean Air Day, find useful tips to reduce your exposure to polluted air and subscribe to a free alert service informing you when air pollution levels are moderate or higher in your area.

Clean Air Day takes place on Thursday 18 June, offering practical advice on how to reduce your exposure to poor air quality. 

Air pollution can make breathing more difficult and trigger health problems, particularly for people with asthma or heart or lung conditions, as well as children, older adults and those who are pregnant. 

Get alerts straight to your phone 

Did you know you can sign up to a free local alert service to help you plan ahead? 

airTEXT sends alerts when air pollution levels are forecast to reach moderate or higher in your area. It also provides local three-day forecasts covering pollution, pollen, UV and temperature, helping you take simple steps to protect your health. 

Simple steps to reduce your exposure 

When air quality is poor, you can: 

  • close windows facing traffic or main roads
  • avoid busy roads and choose greener routes using Clean Air Routes
  • switch off your engine when parked or waiting
  • limit strenuous outdoor exercise
  • keep your inhaler with you if prescribed and use it as directed
