Each year, the ‘Be Water Aware campaign’ reminds us of the dangers of open water and shares important safety advice as the weather gets warmer and more people get outdoors. This year, it is running from Monday 27 April to Sunday 3 May.
In spring and summer, it’s always tempting to relax by the water. At this time of year, young people may also have more free time during study leave and school holidays, and we understand how tempting it can be to unwind by the water with friends.
However, rivers are never risk‑free. Even on warm days, water temperatures remain cold and strong currents can overwhelm even confident swimmers. Tragically, lives are lost every year due to accidental drownings.
Everyone has a role to play in staying safe. Although schools play an important role in sharing water safety messages, parents and carers are also encouraged to regularly talk to children and young people about the dangers of open water, what to do if someone gets into trouble, and where to find water safety equipment along the river.
Help prevent accidents by taking a few minutes to read the Be Water Aware safety tips and getting involved in local community water safety events run by the Fire and Rescue Service and the RNLI. They are always happy to offer advice and answer questions on staying safe around water.
