Elmbridge Borough Council is bringing forward plans to return the Old Post Office building on Esher High Street to productive use, supporting local businesses, jobs and town centre activity.
The prominent High Street property has been vacant since January 2025. Following an extensive open-market marketing exercise, the council has identified a preferred bidder who intends to occupy the building as office space.
The proposal would see a local business take a long-term lease of the building, creating a new base for employment in the town centre and helping to increase footfall for nearby shops, cafés and other local businesses. The occupier is also expected to invest in the building, bringing a currently vacant site back into active use.
The decision supports the ambitions set out in the Esher Vision, which aims to encourage business investment, create employment opportunities and strengthen the vitality of the High Street.
If agreed by an Elmbridge Cabinet meeting on 27 October, the proposed disposal would be referred to the East Surrey Shadow Executive for the approvals required under local government reorganisation arrangements before the transaction can be completed.
Councillor Simon Waugh, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Commercial Strategy.
