We’re asking for your views on the future of the Public Space Protection Order (PSPOs) that prohibits barbecues, campfires, bonfires and other naked flames in Elmbridge parks, open spaces and countryside sites, as well as unauthorised fishing, camping, and activities associated with overnight fishing and camping at Albany Reach and Ditton Reach (Thames Ditton) and Cigarette Island (East Molesey) between the hours of 7pm and 7am.
These two PSPOs were introduced in 2023 following a public consultation. They were shaped by residents’ feedback, which highlighted concerns about the risks posed by fires, as well as unauthorised overnight fishing and camping at Albany Reach and Ditton Reach (Thames Ditton) and Cigarette Island (East Molesey). These activities were seen to put people, wildlife and the environment at risk.
Why the PSPOs are in place:
The orders have helped to:
- reduce the risk of wildfires, particularly during hot and dry weather
- protect wildlife, natural habitats and green spaces
- keep visitors safe while enjoying our outdoor areas
Have your say
The current PSPOs are due to expire in July 2026. We are proposing to extend the orders to ensure these protections remain in place.
As we are looking to extend the existing rules (rather than introduce changes), we want to hear from residents, visitors and local stakeholders on whether the PSPOs should continue.
Your feedback will help inform a decision by Cabinet on whether to extend the PSPOs until July 2029.
Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and share your views.
The survey closes on 22 June.
