Step back nearly 2,000 years and explore the rich Roman history of Cobham at this fascinating Elmbridge Museum display at Cobham Library.
This temporary exhibition reveals the Roman influence on the local area through the remarkable 1942 excavation of a Roman bath house at Chatley Farm. Exceptionally well preserved and carefully documented, the discovery provides a valuable insight into how Roman life took shape in Britain.
By focusing on Roman history in a local setting, the exhibition highlights the two‑way exchange of ideas and customs. While the Romans introduced practices that still influence our lives today, from language to architecture, they also adopted aspects of existing British culture. ‘Roman Cobham’ shows how this shared history helped shape everyday life in the area.
A Roman history discovery box linked to the exhibition is also available for hire by Elmbridge schools and community groups, helping to bring local history to life beyond the display.
