Elmbridge Museum celebrates a century of Weybridge Ladies Amateur Rowing Club

This summer, Elmbridge Museum celebrates a century of Weybridge Ladies Amateur Rowing Club with 'Making Waves', a new display and online exhibition exploring the life and legacy of the club's founder, Amy Gentry.

Amy Gentry was a trailblazer in British rowing and one of the most influential figures in the history of women's sport. A champion rower, administrator and campaigner, she played a leading role in advancing women's rowing in Britain and internationally, helping pave the way for women to compete at the highest level. Her work contributed to the eventual inclusion of women's rowing in the Olympic Games and continues to inspire generations of athletes.  

‘Making Waves’ display, online exhibition and blog 

The ‘Making Waves’ display case is on show at Weybridge Library Hub until January 2027. It tells the story of Amy Gentry and includes personal artefacts, rowing kit, trophies and photographs from her life and career.  

Alongside the display, visitors can explore the Museum's online exhibition, which traces the history of WLARC from its founding in 1926 to the present day, celebrating the women who helped transform rowing from a male-dominated sport into one in which women could thrive.  

The accompanying exhibition’s blog uncovers another side of Amy's life, exploring her interests in singing, drama and other pursuits beyond rowing through objects generously donated to the Museum.  

Special talk 

To mark the centenary celebrations, Elmbridge Museum is hosting a special illustrated talk about Amy Gentry's life and legacy.
