Elmbridge mourns the loss of Councillor Peter Harman

Everyone at Elmbridge Borough Council is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Councillor Peter Harman.

Councillor Harman was a dedicated public servant who served the borough and the residents of Weybridge and St George's Hill over many years.

First elected to Elmbridge Borough Council in 2002 for St George's Hill Ward, he served until 2010 before returning for a second term from 2011 to 2015. He was re-elected in 2016 to represent the newly named Weybridge, St George's Hill Ward and continued to serve residents until his death.

Throughout his time as a councillor, Cllr Harman made a significant contribution to the work of the council. He served on a number of committees, including overview and scrutiny committees, licensing and planning. Planning was a particular area of interest, and he was a long-standing member of the Planning Committee, where he also served as Vice-Chairman for four years.

He was also an active member of the Licensing Committee for many years and was Vice-Chairman of the Committee from 2023 to 2026.

As a mark of respect, the Elmbridge flag will be flown at half-mast for the remainder of the week and again on the day of his funeral.

"Councillor Peter Harman served Elmbridge with dedication and distinction over many years. He was a thoughtful and committed Councillor whose experience, knowledge and unwavering focus on his community earned him the respect of colleagues from across the Council.

“Peter's contribution to public life in Elmbridge was significant, and his loss will be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."

Cllr Simon Waugh, Deputy Leader of Elmbridge Borough Council said:

"Peter's dedication to public service was evident in everything he did. He cared deeply about Elmbridge and the people he represented, and he brought both experience and integrity to his role as a councillor. He was respected across the council and valued by all who worked with him. Peter's contribution to our borough leaves a lasting legacy, and he will be remembered with great affection. My condolences to Peter’s family and friends.”

Cllr John Cope, Leader of the Conservative Group said:

“I was so sorry to learn of Peter's death. He was more than a respected colleague - he was a genuinely kind man and a friend to many of us across the council, and his commitment to Weybridge never wavered.

"Peter worked tirelessly for his residents, bringing a wealth of knowledge, careful judgement, and real warmth to everything he did. Those of us who sat alongside him will miss him as a colleague and as a friend, and my heartfelt condolences go to his family and friends at this very sad time."
