Volunteer walk leader wanted – help make walking inclusive for everyone in Elmbridge

Inclusive wellbeing walks

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our wellbeing walks volunteers’ team to support our weekly inclusive walk every Monday from 11am to 11:45am/12pm along the Thames towpath. This walk starts and finishes at Elmbridge Xcel leisure complex in Walton, with an option to enjoy a coffee afterwards.

About the wellbeing inclusive walks

Our non-judgmental and friendly inclusive walking group welcomes people of all abilities, backgrounds, and experiences, providing support and encouragement to participants. This weekly walk is suitable for those with limited mobility, whether rehabilitating from injury or surgery, living with a long-term disability, or managing a long-term medical condition. We also welcome individuals who are visually or hearing-impaired, as well as those with mental health and learning disabilities. Carers and family members are encouraged to join.

The walk is designed for those who can manage a short walk or wheel but may not have the energy for longer distances. The total length is 1km, with a minimum distance of 300m to participate, including a stop at the first bench on the route.

About the inclusive walk volunteering role

If you love walking, meeting new people, and are compassionate, patient, supportive, and passionate about making the outdoors accessible to all, we would love to hear from you.

The ideal candidates will:

  • encourage walkers at their own pace, offering a friendly ear and motivation.
  • create a safe and enjoyable space for all, with a commitment to regular walks.
  • be confident in giving clear directions and making everyone feel included.
  • enjoy connecting with others and fostering a sense of community.

Experience and training

No prior walk leading experience is necessary and training will be provided. You’ll receive Rambler’s wellbeing walk leader training and first aid training to ensure you feel confident in your role. Inclusive walks volunteers also get a free membership at the Elmbridge Xcel leisure complex. You will be part of the wider Elmbridge wellbeing walks leader community, with opportunities to get involved in other walks.

If you’re interested in making a difference and leading walks that everyone can enjoy, please get in touch at health@elmbridge.gov.uk.
