This week, we proudly celebrated a remarkable milestone: 20 years of Elmbridge Cycle Rides, a community initiative that has brought together hundreds of residents through the simple joy of cycling.

The programme began with the success of the Healthy Walks initiative, launched by Diana Coleman, and was soon followed by Healthy Cycle Rides, introduced by Susan Scorer. With the support, enthusiasm and organisational skills of dedicated volunteers like Janet and Roy Turner, the rides quickly grew from seasonal outings into a year-round calendar of events. The goal was clear: to promote physical activity, social connection, and a deeper appreciation of Elmbridge’s natural beauty, linking villages and showcasing the borough’s rivers, parks, and commons.

Soon, weekly outings and seasonal events, such as the much-loved pre-Christmas lunch, created lasting friendships and a strong sense of community.

Councillor Simon Waugh, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Commercial Strategy, said,

The impact of Elmbridge Cycle Rides goes far beyond physical health. It has created a welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, explore their local area, and support one another. As the rides enter their third decade, the journey continues. Thanks to our wonderful volunteer cycle ride leaders, the wheels keep turning, and so does the community spirit. It’s uplifting to see our programme of weekly cycle rides going from strength to strength.

New participants are always welcome, so if you’d like to join for a free ride, visit Elmbridge Cycle Rides.
