Junior Citizen 2025: Empowering the next generation

group of school children alongside Cllr Kirsty Hewens and Mayor of Elmbridge, Cllr Neil Houston

The Elmbridge Community and Safety Partnership held Junior Citizen at Sandown Park Racecourse earlier this month, hosting over 1000 school pupils between 27 March and 4 April.

The year 6 pupils from local schools had the opportunity to participate in a number of interactive safety workshops, co-ordinated by Child Safety Media. The workshops covered a wide range of topics designed to help the pupils learn vital life skills, become more risk aware and stay healthy and safe in the future.

Workshops were facilitated by:

  • South East Coast Ambulance Service
  • Children and Family Health Surrey school nurses
  • Network Rail/ South Western Railway/ British Transport Police
  • Surbiton Hockey Club
  • Places for People Leisure
  • Oxshott Net Zero

On 2 April, the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Neil Houston and Councillor Kirsty Hewens, Portfolio holder for enterprise, parking and local economy, attended a showcase day to take part in the interactive sessions and meet the school children.

We would like to express our thanks to the Jockey Club, the participating agencies and their volunteers.

Councillor Kirsty Hewens, Portfolio Holder for Enterprise, Parking and Local Economy praised the programme: “It was wonderful to see so many young people acquiring essential skills to keep themselves and others safe in our community. Learning these skills before moving on to secondary school, where they will gain more independence, is crucial. Thank you to all the participating schools and our partner organisations for their commitment to the well-being and safety of our young residents.”
