Today is Clean Air Day, the UK’s largest air pollution awareness campaign led by Global Action Plan. It is a reminder of how the air we breathe affects our health and how we can all take simple steps to make it cleaner.
While it is just one day, Clean Air Day offers tips and inspiration to make lasting changes that support cleaner air in Elmbridge and beyond.
Why clean air matters
Air pollution is often invisible, but its effects are very real. It can harm our lungs, heart, and brain, and long-term exposure increases the risk of serious illnesses, including cancer.
This year’s campaign highlights how air pollution affects us throughout our lives, from childhood to old age. The most vulnerable among us, children, the elderly and those with existing health conditions are especially at risk.
What you can do
The good news? We can all take practical steps to improve air quality:
- Walk, cycle, or use public transport whenever possible.
- Leave the car at home and try to do so at least once a week.
- Park and stride: if you must drive, park further away and walk part of the journey.
- Don’t idle: turn off your engine when stationary to reduce harmful emissions.
Together, these small actions can make a big difference to our health and our environment.
