Local businesses: say no to Single Use Plastics and lead the way to a more sustainable future with our free toolkit

Plastic waste is not just an inconvenience; it has become a huge environmental challenge, with more than 91% of plastic ending up in landfills or polluting our communities. As we look towards a greener future, now is the time for action.

Reducing plastic use requires collective action. By working together, local businesses, community groups, and residents can have a more meaningful impact. Whether you are a small café, restaurant, a shop, or a service provider, your commitment to cutting Single Use Plastics (SUP) can inspire others in the community to adopt sustainable practices.

Steps you can take as a business to reduce single use plastics:

To help you along the way, we have developed a simple toolkit including posters, digital banners and a short youtube animation you can share with your employees and business partners.

It highlights the tangible actions you can take as a business to lead the way, move away from SUP and inspire others to follow:

  • Make a Plan to eliminate SUP in your office. This could involve conducting an audit of current plastic usage and identifying areas for improvement.

  • Reduce SUP food and drink packaging on your premises: consider bulk purchase options or reusable packaging.

  • Purchase environmentally friendly cleaning products in recyclable or refillable packaging.

  • Look into eco-friendly biodegradable or reusable options alternative options for common SUP.

  • Talk to your suppliers about cutting plastics from deliveries or ask for sustainable packing solutions.

  • Develop relationships with business partners who share your commitment to reducing plastic use.

Engaging employees in sustainability

One of the most crucial aspects of any sustainability initiative is employee engagement. Here are a few ideas to get them involved:

  • Educate or train employees about the impact of plastic waste and the importance of sustainability.
  • Consider incentives for employees who come up with innovative plastic reduction ideas.
  • Create a green team dedicated to support sustainability, drive initiatives, track progress, and keep everyone informed and motivated.

Councillor Ashley Tilling, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change, Environmental Services and Sustainability, said: “Every small action counts when it comes to reducing plastic waste. By joining Elmbridge’s mission to eliminate Single Use Plastics, your business will not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also demonstrate leadership in sustainability. Whether you are already committed to reducing your carbon footprint or just starting your journey, your participation will make a difference and inspire other local businesses and community members to adopt sustainable practices”.
