Overview and how to register

Before you start, you can check if you are already registered.

To register to vote, you will need to:

  • fill in details including your name, address and date of birth
  • provide your National Insurance number (if you have one), which can be found on your National Insurance card, or in official paperwork such as payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits

If you do not have a National Insurance number, you can still apply, but we may contact you later to request other documents.

If you do not have a fixed address

If you do not have a fixed address, you can register to vote by filling in a declaration of local connection form. This applies if you’re:

  • living in temporary accommodation
  • homeless
  • in prison on remand
  • living at a mental health facility

Contact electoral services to request a declaration of local connection form.

Help with registering to vote

If you need help with registering to vote, contact electoral services or call 01372 474474.

Electoral register and Council Tax

The electoral register and Council Tax records are separate and contain different information. Registering to vote does not register you for Council Tax. In the same way, registering for Council Tax does not register you to vote.
