By-election for the Hinchley Wood, Claygate and Oxshott County Council Division

Information on voting in the Surrey County Council by-election on 21 August 2025.

To vote in the by-election you must:

  • be registered to vote
  • be 18 or over on 21 August 2025 
  • be a British, Irish, Commonwealth or Qualifying European Union citizen
  • be resident at an address in the UK a
  • not be legally excluded from voting

You can only vote in this by-election if you are registered to vote at an address within the Hinchley Wood, Claygate and Oxshott County Council Division

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Tuesday 5 August 2025.


Voter photo ID

You now need to bring photo ID to vote at a polling station.  If you don't have accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate.

The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday 13 August 2025  

If you use postal voting, there is no voter ID requirement.


Poll cards

Every eligible registered voter will be sent a poll card with information about the election including your polling station.  You will receive your poll card about a month before the election. If you have not received a poll card, or you have recently moved, you may not be registered to vote.

The deadline to apply to vote by post is 5pm on Wednesday 6 August 2025. 

Apply to vote by proxy on GOV.UK

The deadline to apply to vote by proxy is 5pm on 13 August 2025.

Vote at your polling station

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 21 August 2025. 
Remember to bring accepted voter photo ID.

We offer a range of help for disabled voters at polling stations.

How to complete the ballot paper 

Always read the instructions on how to complete the ballot paper carefully, even if you have voted before. The ballot paper lists the name of each of the parties and candidates along with their party logo (if any).


Results

We will publish the election results once they have been declared.

The press and candidates can confirm details of the count venue by contacting electoral@elmbridge.gov.uk.
