Council Tax discounts and exemptions

Reductions for disabled people

You can apply for a reduction on Council Tax if the property is the main home of at least one disabled person (adult or child). To apply, download and complete the application form below.

If you qualify, your bill will be reduced to the next lowest Council Tax band (although the band will stay the same). For example, if your home is in Band D, you’ll pay the Band C rate.

Criteria

A disabled adult or child must live in the property and the disability must be substantial and permanent.

Your home must meet at least one of the following:

  • an additional bathroom or kitchen to meet the needs of the disabled person
  • an additional room (not a bathroom, kitchen or lavatory) mainly used by the disabled person to meet their needs (for example, a room used for storing dialysis equipment or therapy)
  • the disabled person uses a wheelchair indoors

An inspector may need to visit your home and, in certain circumstances, we may need to contact the disabled person’s doctor or specialist.
