Refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle

The are many steps you can take to refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle, and you can also get creative on the journey.

Refuse

Refuse means avoiding the production of waste. You can reduce your waste by making small changes:

  • reduce your food waste - buy only what you need, freeze food when you can and plan out your meals for the week
  • shop smartly – buy more durable reusable items and avoid disposable items, this will save you money along the way too
  • go paperless – reading news online and stopping unwanted mail can help you avoid unnecessary waste

Reduce waste

Reducing what you waste and reusing items where you can is a great way to minimise climate change impacts.

There are many ways that you can start making a real difference by looking at the way you consume and the lifetime of your products.

How can you reduce?

To reduce:

  • only buy what you need, and use what you buy
  • sign up to paperless where you can
  • buy loose fruit and vegetables
  • buy refillable water bottles and water cups
  • buy products with refillable packaging
  • buy items that have a longer life than disposable items

Reuse where possible

Reusing items is a great way to save both money and the planet. It can also help you to purchase less single-use or disposable goods.

Donate
Donate items that are still usable and in good condition to charity shops. This can also be an ideal way to avoid fast fashion.

Get creative

Sustainable gifting
When wrapping a gift for a loved one, try to reduce wrapping paper or recyclable gift bags.

Repurpose

Repairing items instead of buying new is a great way to save money and avoid unnecessary waste.

If you have an item that is need of a repair, pop along to one of Elmbridge’s repair cafés:

  • Walton Repair Café which runs on the second Saturday morning and fourth Wednesday afternoon at the Walton Centre for the Community - see Elmbridge Eco Hub: Repair Cafe for more information
  • Oxshott Net Zero which runs from 2pm to 4:30pm 6 times a year at Danes Hill School in Oxshott - visit Oxshott Net Zero: Repair Cafe for more information

Recycling for the future

As a nation we need to make recycling best practice, to make a better world for future generations.

We recognise with so many different rules on what you can and can’t recycle, it can be a bit overwhelming. We have partnered with Rethink Waste and created Greenredeem, which provides hints and tips on recycling and also enables you to earn rewards for your efforts.

Recycling collection

For information about your recycling collection, including what can and can’t go in your blue-lidded recycling bin see recycling collection. Soft plastics, plastic films, plastic bags and wrapping and flexible plastics can now all be recycled at your local supermarket.

For further help and information on how to recycle specific items that cannot go in your recycle bin, please see:

  • recycling centres (tips and dumps) and bring banks (for food and drink carton recycling)
  • Elmbridge Eco Hub for food and drink wrappers, packaging and containers, filter coffee bags and broken toys

Types of waste

Plastic

Plastic is everywhere! It’s in the water we drink, the air we breathe and in the food we eat. It’s not always obvious, but the lifecycle of plastics can have indirect negative impacts on climate change.

How can you avoid plastic?

To avoid plastic:

  • use a refillable bottle
  • swap a disposable cup with a sustainable reusable cup
  • choose plastic-free cleaning products and homemade alternatives
  • swap liquid soap and body wash to soap bars
  • avoid pre-packaged foods by choosing bulk or loose food
  • bring your own reusable shopping bags

Food waste

Methane from food waste can have a greater impact on climate change than CO2, with 1 tonne of methane being equivalent to 27 tonnes of CO2.
