Campaigns

At Elmbridge Borough Council, we are striving towards a greener future for our community. We have launched several campaigns to encourage positive change in the borough.

Anti-idling

With a vision of being a thriving and sustainable borough, we encourage residents, communities and local businesses not to idle while in your vehicle. This is because leaving your engine running while your car is stationary can have a significant impact on Elmbridge’s air quality and climate change.

What is idling?

Idling is where drivers leave their vehicle’s engine running while it is stationary. While this can often be the result of traffic, there are cases where you can turn your engine off, such as waiting at level crossings or waiting outside schools or businesses.

Find out facts about idling

Did you know ... ?

  • a minute of an engine idling creates an equivalent of 150 balloons of harmful emissions
  • if you leave your engine for no reason while the car is stationary on a public road you may receive a fine
  • when you park up and leave the ignition on, the heater should stay warm for up to 30 minutes for you to use
  • you can make a real difference by pledging to keep Elmbridge idle-free: by turning off your car, you can improve the air quality inside and outside your car, reduce health risks for yourself and others and make Elmbridge’s streets and level crossings nicer places to walk and cycle

More campaigns

Our campaigns aim to raise awareness of eco-friendly choices, including lowering energy usage, reducing litter and encouraging solar panel installation.

Switch and Save

Our Switch and Save graphics promote less energy usage. We often share these across our social media channels. You can also view our Switch and Save videos on our clean energy page.

Keep Elmbridge Tidy

In June 2023, we adopted a multi-faceted approach – a Keep Elmbridge Tidy communications campaign:

  • encouraging our litter picking groups
  • installing new bins in our towns and high streets
  • implementing more visible enforcement

Solar Together Surrey

We supported Surrey County Council on the launch of Solar Together Surrey, an initiative aimed at promoting domestic electricity generation via rooftop solar panel installations across Surrey, saving residents money on their energy bills and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for Surrey.
