Free swimming lessons for 12 years plus

As part of our Respect the water – Drowning Prevention Plan and during the May half-term school holiday, in partnership with Places Leisure, our leisure contractor, we are offering free swimming lessons to young people aged 12+ (secondary school) for non-swimmers, or people who are not confident at swimming at the Xcel leisure complex in Walton. We are also offering a free lifeguard course for young people aged 16+, with a potential apprenticeship at Xcel / Hurst Pool following the qualification.

Free swimming: ages 12+

  • When: Monday 29 May to Friday 2 June
  • Times: 2pm to 3:30pm
  • Where: Xcel Leisure Complex, Waterside Drive, Walton on Thames KT12 2JG

Free NPLQ Lifeguarding course: ages 16+ max 12 spaces

  • When: Monday 29 May to Saturday 3 June
  • Times: 9am to 5:30pm. Course assessment on Saturday 2 June. Maximum:12 candidates for the course.
  • Where: Xcel Leisure Complex, Waterside Drive, Walton on Thames KT12 2JG

Please see below for the Lifeguard Course pre-requisites:

Every candidate attending a NPLQ course must be at least 16 years old at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment and be able to:

  • jump or dive into deep water
  • swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
  • swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
  • tread water for 30 seconds
  • surface dive to the floor of the pool
  • climb out unaided without ladder or steps and where the pool design permits

We look forward to hearing from young non-swimmers or youngsters interested in becoming a lifeguard.
