We offer in-person work experience placements at the Civic Centre in Esher. Some of our departments also offer virtual work experience. There are a wide range of jobs at the council which give you the opportunity to develop your skills and gain experience of working life.
What to expect
Work experience varies but it could include:
- preparing documents
- research
- shadowing experienced members of the department with their day-to-day work
- attending meetings or events
During your work experience, you’ll be expected to:
- get stuck in and contribute to the department you are working in
- attend work on time
- follow council rules
- be diligent about health and safety
How to apply
We welcome applications from students who live locally, attend a school or college in Elmbridge or who are interested in a career in local or central government.
Apply in advance. We receive a high number of requests, and it is not always possible to accommodate all placements.
Due to high demand of applications, requests for work experience have been temporarily paused.
In your application, please tell us about your interest in the departments and why you have chosen them. There is no word limit so please give as much information as possible. Our structure chart explains more about what each department does:
What happens next
Once we receive your application we will check whether there is a placement available within your chosen departments and you should hear back from us within 2 weeks. We will also contact your school to ensure they are aware of the work experience placement.
Schools organising work experience placements should ensure that policies and procedures are in place to protect children from harm.
