Frequently asked questions

Hurst Pool refurbishment - FAQs

Your questions answered:

Q1: What is happening at Hurst Pool?
A: £1.3 million refurbishment project will begin in March 2026 to modernise and improve the facility. This includes upgraded changing rooms, refreshed interior décor and improved energy efficiency.

Q2: Why is the refurbishment needed?
A: Hurst Pool has served the community since 1996 and welcomes about 157,000 visits each year. Although well maintained, it now needs major upgrades to stay modern, safe and sustainable. The refurbishment will improve safety, comfort and the overall experience by updating facilities, finishes and meeting current standards. The refurbishment plans were shaped by user feedback collected through a 2023 survey and designed with sustainability at their core.

Q3: When will the work start and finish?
A: Work is scheduled to start at the end of March 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2026.

Q4: Will the pool be closed during the refurbishment?
A: Yes, the pool will be closed for the duration of the works to ensure safety and allow for efficient completion. We understand this may cause inconvenience and are working on options to minimise disruption.

Q5: What will happen to swimming lessons and activities during closure?
A: Places Leisure is preparing an alternative swimming programme and exploring access to neighbouring facilities to ensure residents can continue swimming activities. This will be communicated to existing customers as soon as available.

Q6: How will the refurbishment benefit residents?
A: The upgrades will provide modernised changing rooms, improved décor, better energy efficiency and enhanced visitor experience, including new vending options and a more welcoming viewing gallery.

Q7: What pool areas are being refurbished?
A: The refurbishment covers:

  • reception and back-of-house areas
  • changing village, shower and toilet facilities
  • poolside, including the pool hall
  • external and internal doors
  • wall, floor and ceiling finishes
  • new tiling throughout

Q8: What changes will be made to the changing rooms?
A: All fittings will be stripped out, including cubicles, lockers, benches, vanity units, mirrors and bathroom accessories. New, modern fixtures will be installed.

Q9: What changes will be made to the reception area?
A: The reception area will be reconfigured to improve viewing space for parents/carers watching their children swim. Also, the refurbishment will improve the overall environment which will include new lighting, furniture, vending facilities, and a full re-decoration.

Q10: How is sustainability being addressed?
A: The refurbishment includes measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce the pool’s carbon footprint including PV panels to allow Hurst Pool to generate its own electricity. Where possible, materials and fixtures have been chosen to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.

Q11: Will there be noise or disruption for residents living close to the pool?
A: Dunstall Way residents will be given plenty of notice before works start. Some noise and disruption are expected during working hours, but contractors will aim to minimise inconvenience.

Q12: How will safety be managed during the refurbishment?
A: The site will be secured, and only authorised personnel will have access. Clear signage and barriers will be in place.

Q13: Where can I find updates and more information?
Regular updates will be shared on the Elmbridge Borough Council and the Places Leisure website.

Q14: Who is managing the pool and the refurbishment?
Places Leisure, who manage Hurst Pool on behalf of Elmbridge Borough Council, will be overseeing the refurbishment works.
