In memory of benches and plaques in green spaces

Information about in memory benches and dedication plaques, and how to apply.

You can apply for memorial benches or dedication plaques in Elmbridge.

Unfortunately, this scheme is currently closed for new applicants.  We will review this in autumn 2025.

If you have previously made an application, it will be dealt with as soon as possible. Please bear with us while we work through the applications in date order.

Benches

In memory benches are:

  • metal to ensure a long life span
  • installed by council-approved contractors
  • installed with paving slabs to the front to reduce erosion, when they are situated on grass

Dedication plaques

All new or replacement benches can be fitted with an in memory of plaque.

New benches can accommodate up to 5 plaques (except historic benches, which can only be used to display a single plaque).

We will always try to accommodate your request. If this isn't possible on an existing bench, we will look for an alternative as close as possible to your original request.

Plaques are made of stainless steel, with black inlay wording and 4 screw holes. They will be a maximum size of:

  • 150 x 35 x 1.5mm (landscape format) for new benches
  • 150 x 40 x 1.5mm for old style benches

You will be able to discuss with us the wording and font size best suited for your dedication plaque.

Locations

We have lots of benches in green spaces across Elmbridge and where possible we will provide a location to install a replacement or new bench.

If we are unable to accommodate a request for a specific location, we will:

  • suggest a replacement bench on the desired site if an existing bench is beyond repair or cannot be refurbished
  • suggest a bench on a nearby site

We can't offer benches at the following locations where we are currently at full capacity:

  • Hurst Park open space
  • Cowey Sale open space
  • Graburn Way open space
  • Churchfields Recreation Grounds
  • cemeteries (waiting list in place for installation from 2024)
