Reporting damage to protected trees

Trees are protected either through planning designations (being within a Conservation Area, an Ancient Woodland or a Tree Preservation Order) or through planning permission requirements (where a tree is identified for retention or as new planting).

If you are concerned that damage is occurring to a protected tree(s) please report it to us.

Where it is in the public interest the Council may pursue this matter through the courts and a successful prosecution can result in a criminal record and/or a fine of up to £20,000.

For application forms for works to trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order or within a Conservation Area please see: applying to work on a protected tree.
