How can the exercise referral scheme help you?

 Exercise has been shown to:

  • reduce the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis

  • manage weight, diabetes and depression

  • lower blood pressure, cholesterol and stress levels

  • increase muscle strength and joint flexibility

  • improve self esteem and general mood

Where can you exercise with the referral scheme?

Our exercise referral programme is run from for several sites:

Joining the scheme

  • You can join our Strength and Balance (Otago) classes or our Paracise classes with out a referral letter.

  • To join the exercise referral scheme, you need approval from your healthcare professional, along with information regarding the reason for referral. Fill in the  online form together with your GP or healthcare specialist to register on the scheme.  

  • Please note all referring healthcare professionals need to be registered to the scheme. You can contact the Health Development Officer at leisure@elmbridge.gov.uk to find out if your healthcare specialist is registered.

  • There is the option to do classes, attend the gym or combine the two. All the classes and gym sessions are taught by highly qualified, supportive and experienced instructors. 

Paracise

* Session types explained

  • Cardiac Rehab:  A group exercise class with a group warm up followed by a circuit where you will be on each work station for a minute, followed by a group cool down.

  • Spin: An indoor bike class.

  • Circuits: A group exercise class where gym equipment (eg treadmill, bike) is used as part of the circuit

  • Paracise: exercise to music, gentle on the joints, flowing smoothly through movements designed to improve posture, balance, mobility and flexibility, whilst improving your muscle memory.  Fabulous music and innovative choreography leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated.  No floor work.  Grow young with Paracise.

  • Otago; a strength and balance class aimed at those worried about falling. Improve strength and balance in a friendly, relaxed and supportive group. Mainly standing exercises.
     

Note: All circuit classes have been designed specifically for Cardiac Rehab and to accommodate a vast number of referral reasons. The circuit can be adjusted to make each exercise easier or harder as appropriate or have an alternative exercise substituted where required.

Gym exercise referral

The gym exercise referral is only available at Xcel Leisure Complex, runs for 12 consecutive weeks and is structured as follows:

  • 1st appointment: Initial assessment where your referral form is discussed and all paperwork completed. A fitness test may also be carried out at this time.

  • 2nd appointment  A bespoke programme is written for you.

  • 3rd appointment  A mid-way review of progress and programme altered as necessary.

  • 4th appointment  Final assessment where the fitness test will be repeated and you will be invited to join the gym.

The total cost of the programme is £90, including one to one assessments and use of the gym for 12 weeks (restrictions apply to the gym usage in the first 6 weeks).

If you wish to swim the cost of this is £1.35 per swim under the exercise referral scheme

Seated yoga classes 

The chair replaces the yoga mat and becomes an extension of your body allowing you to take advantage of yoga’s fitness and health potential. The chair-yoga sessions are for mixed abilities. They are held:

  • Thursdays at 10-11.00am at Walton Centre for the Community (balance and chair yoga) £3.50

  • Fridays at 5.30-6.30pm at the Xcel Leisure Complex in Walton-on-Thames £10
