Elmbridge safe place scheme

What is the safe place scheme?

A safe place helps vulnerable people if they are feeling scared, confused, upset or anxious while out and about and need support right away. The scheme offers a safe way for vulnerable residents to alert someone about a potential risk or challenge, if they are out on their own.

These places could be centres for the community, shops, restaurants and other local businesses.

The Elmbridge safe place scheme is primarily designed to support:

  • people with memory loss

  • people with learning disabilities

  • people with physical disabilities or reduced mobility

  • people with autism/autism spectrum disorder

  • people with mental health concerns

  • people who are deaf/ hard of hearing

  • people who are blind or partially sighted

  • older people

How does it work?

A safe place logo will be visible in a window or on a door to help vulnerable residents identify a registered venue or 'safe place'. Staff will be able to assist by:

  • Calling an emergency contact or the emergency services. The person may already carry a card which has the name of a trusted person on it.

  • Providing a glass of water and a quiet area to sit down.

  • Offering reassurance until someone else can come to support the person or the situation has been resolved.

Where can I find a safe place scheme?

At present, the safe place scheme is being trialled in the Walton-on-Thames area. Over the coming months we hope to expand the scheme to cover other areas of Elmbridge.
