What are your tips for sustainable living?

We are asking residents to tell us about the ways they are living more sustainably and reducing their carbon footprint.

Sustainability and carbon reduction are a priority for the council, and we are working to become a more sustainable organisation.  We have recently launched our Sustainable Elmbridge web pages to explain what we are doing in key areas such as travel, environment and development.

One of our council priorities for this year (2021/22) is to deliver on the initial stages of the Carbon Reduction Action Plan. This is key to ensuring that tangible progress is made towards our 2030 carbon neutral target.  We are also backing Surrey’s climate change strategy which commits to Surrey becoming net zero carbon by 2050.

We know that many of our residents are also prioritising sustainability and making positive changes to reduce their impact on the environment.  We want to invite residents to let us know more about what they are doing by submitting their sustainable living tips.  We will compile these ideas and publish them later this year to inspire others to take action too.

Councillor Sadler, Leader of Elmbridge Borough Council said, “In a year where we have seen heat domes, increased temperatures generally, flooding and even 20 degrees in October in the UK, we know that we need to change our approach and live more sustainably. At Elmbridge Borough Council we have pledged to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030, we are installing more electric vehicle chargers and we are encouraging our residents to make changes in their lives to protect the planet but we all need to do more. Carbon reduction and sustainable living are key to council’s strategy now and in the future.”

Councillor Tilling, Portfolio Holder for Environment, added, “Climate change is not a challenge we can face alone – we depend on Elmbridge residents and businesses in helping us to become a more environmentally friendly borough. COP26 provides the perfect opportunity for us to learn from each other about living more sustainably and reducing our impact on the planet.”

Go to: Your sustainable living tips to tell us how you are reducing your carbon footprint and living more sustainably.  The deadline for submitting ideas is 30 November 2021.  We will compile and publish a selection of ideas on our website later in the year.
