It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Councillor Dorothy Mitchell.
As a serving Elmbridge Borough Councillor, Councillor Mrs. Mitchell was first elected to the Council for Cobham and Downside Ward in May 1983 and served until to May 2004. She was re-elected in May 2010, until the present time. Councillor Mrs. Mitchell had served as Mayor of Elmbridge for the 1991-1992 Municipal Year and had held the position as Portfolio Holder for Highways and Transport from May 2011 to May 2015, inclusive. Cllr Mrs. Mitchell also represented the Cobham Division at Surrey County Council for eight years until 2009.
Councillor Mrs. Mitchell also served on a number of the Council’s Committees, including the Policy and Resources Committee (1992-2001) and Town Planning Committee (1988-2001); and was Chairman of the former West Area Planning Sub-Committee from 1992 to 1997. She was Chairman of the South Area Planning Sub-Committee from 2019/20 to date, and prior to that served as its Vice-Chairman from 2013/14 to 2018/19 inclusive.. She was also a long-standing Member of the Planning Committee, being a member of that Committee from 2010 to date.
Councillor James Browne, Leader of the Elmbridge Conservatives and fellow ward councillor in Cobham and Downside, said: "Dorothy and I have worked together for the past 13 years but her service to the people of Cobham, Elmbridge and Surrey as a whole goes back for more than three decades. She was a generous and supportive colleague, a tough defender of the interests of local residents and a dedicated public servant who will be sorely missed."
Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.
