New green initiative launches

Be part of the solution!

A new initiative to tackle household and food waste launches today (1 November) in Elmbridge.

The partnership between Elmbridge Borough Council, Joint Waste Solutions (JWS) and Greenredeem provides residents with a new digital platform with the aim of encouraging waste reduction. The programme is funded by the Surrey Environmental Partnership as one of a number of initiatives to improve waste management and recycling across Surrey.

Doing what we can to support a sustainable Elmbridge and help tackle climate change has never been more important. This initiative gives residents the tools to make small lifestyle changes that will empower them to make a difference.

Residents who sign up will receive a personalised experience, through which they will learn how to reduce waste and get rewarded for doing it.

Register before 1 December 2021 for your chance to win a £20 gift card.

Councillor Ashley Tilling, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, is thrilled to be able to add the initiative to the Sustainable Elmbridge programme:

“We have recently opened new EV charging points in the Hollyhedge Road car park in Cobham and more are planned elsewhere in the borough. The aim is to encourage more residents to switch to electric vehicles to improve our air quality and reduce carbon emissions. On this subject, I’d like to point out that if you think an on-street charger in your street would nudge you into buying electric, then you can suggest this to Surrey County Council via: On street EV charging points.

“Our biodiversity and woodland management teams are going to be planting more trees in the borough and we are working on further measures to reduce our carbon footprint and to provide a more sustainable future for our residents. Only by working together will we succeed in making Elmbridge a more sustainable community.”

The platform provides fun weekly activities (including videos, quizzes, blogs and pledges) with solutions for how to reduce waste at home and when out and about. By participating in these activities, residents will get rewarded with points. They can use those points to get something back for themselves or donate to their community.

Greenredeem will also be measuring the weight of rubbish picked up by bin collection crews in Elmbridge to see if there have been any reductions, and if there are, more points will be awarded!

There’s something for everyone; other benefits include:

  • Competitions – every few weeks members can enter the prize draw with the chance to win fantastic prizes, such as vouchers, iPads, smart watches or TVs (many of which are eco-friendly, refurbished versions).
  • Charitable donations – points can be turned into cash and donated to local schools and community groups to help fund local environmental projects.
  • Carbon trackersome waste reduction activities have a direct saving on carbon emissions. The tracker provides members with a better understanding of how their actions reduce the impact on the planet and help fight climate change. Residents can track progress and will receive badges as a reward for their achievements.
  • Zero waste map – members can find places near to them such as water refill stations and charity/second hand shops that will help them reduce, reuse, and recycle more waste in their area.
  • Eco shop and rewards – members can explore Greenredeem approved eco-friendly products and access other online discounts and rewards.
