Free activities extended

Fear of judgement is stopping many women from taking part in exercise but Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ national campaign has already managed to inspire thousands of women to have a go, regardless of what people think of them or what they look like when they exercise.

In Elmbridge, local sports clubs are inviting women to join in ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and try something new for free. Many women have already taken advantage of the summer offer of 3 free vouchers to try a new sport or activity and we want more to join the scheme. We have had wonderful feedback from ladies who have taken up rowing after using their free vouchers at a local club and who have joined a regular yoga class to ease health issues.

Does it really matter if women wiggle, jiggle or get sweaty when they exercise? Surely, the most important is that they are doing their thing to get more active and fitter. They are making a difference to themselves by improving their health, wellbeing and confidence.

The Elmbridge ‘This Girl Can’ summer campaign is proving popular with local clubs and participants and we have made the decision to extend the offer until the end of October. All ages and abilities welcome. Beginners will be given a warm welcome.

Here is how you can make the most of the offer:

  • Visit to see what’s available and download your free vouchers

  • Book your sessions with the participating sports clubs and activity groups directly

  • Complete the vouchers and take them along with you on your free sessions

Here are a few of the activities on offer: fitness classes, running, boxing, bowling, cheerleading, judo, karate, tennis, rowing, cricket, football, netball, cycling and yoga. The 3 free vouchers can be used as you wish, for 3 different activities or 3 of the same.

Councillor Janet Turner, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said, “We are delighted with the positive feedback we have received on ‘This Girl Can’ campaign so far. We hope that by extending the offer, many more women will be tempted to try a new sport or activity and make time for themselves. Why not join, it is not too late to have a go!”
