75th Anniversary of VE Day

There are plenty of events taking place between now and May to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

‘Elmbridge at War: The Blitz in our Borough’ exhibition

The exhibition is open in the Civic Centre, Esher and is scheduled to coincide with the VE Day anniversary.

A number of talks have been arranged where Elmbridge Museum's Exhibitions Officer will outline Elmbridge's varied and unique experience of the Blitz in more detail. There will be an opportunity for questions at the end of each talk.

All talks are free and will be held in the foyer at the Civic Centre in Esher on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 12 February 2020  from 12.30-1pm

  • Wednesday 1 April 2020 from 12.30-1pm

  • VE Day Special - Thursday 7 May 2020 from 1.30-2pm

Museum Explorers - Elmbridge at War

When: Monday 17 February
Workshop 1: 10am to 11.30am       Workshop 2: 12pm to 1.30pm
Price: £5 per child (accompanying adults are free)
Ages: children aged 5 to 13 years

Back by popular demand! Find out what life was like in Elmbridge during the Second World War by discovering where bombs fell and handling real WW2 artefacts. Take part in an air raid drill and learn how to create your own gas mask!

Children should be accompanied by a parent or carer, who will be able to enjoy a talk from our Exhibitions and Interpretation Officer about the creation of the Elmbridge at War: The Blitz in our Borough exhibition. The exhibition opened in January 2020 at the Civic Centre.

Spaces are limited so booking is essential using our online booking form.

Shout! - drop-in session

Shout! will be at King George's Hall on Monday 17 February to host a free drop-in session to run alongside the Museum Explorers workshops.

Centres for the Community

  • Cobham - Thursday 7 May - VE Day lunch

  • Weybridge Tuesday 5 May - VE Day coffee morning to raise money for SSAFA (Armed Forces charity). The Weybridge Art Group will also be displaying WW2 paintings in the Weybridge Centre during this week.
