Smokefree Homes
Second-hand smoke can cause cancer and heart disease in adults. Babies, children and the young are affected more as their lungs are under developed and their immune system less resistant to the infections caused by breathing smoke.
Benefits of a smokefree home
- tobacco smoke contains 4000 chemicals which you don't breathe in
- healthier children - eyes and noses not irritated by tobacco smoke and less likely to develop asthma and behavioural problems
- reduced risk of cot death
- reduced risk of family health problems e.g. coughing, wheezing, ear infections and breathing problems
- cleaner house - no more dropped ash or burns on the furniture
- easier for smokers to quit and children are less likely to start smoking themselves
- reduced risk of fire in the home
- family pets healthier and live longer.
