Doorstep Conmen

Photo of lady using safety chain to look out of door linking to Distraction Burglary Awareness WeekA doorstep conman usually takes the form of a workman cold calling at a person's home to persuade the householder to have work done. The price quoted is usually very low, however, this dramatically changes when work is underway. Doorstep conmen are generally skilled charmers who target vulnerable people. They use false names, addresses and phone numbers and usually insist on payment being made in cash.

To fight the battle against conmen at your doorstep contact Surrey's |Rapid Action Team (RAT) to ensure households are not forced into having unwanted work done and to prevent any payment by doorstep conmen.

Encourage relatives, friends and neighbours to follow these simple steps before they answer the door:

  • STOP - are you expecting anybody?
  • CHAIN - secure the door chain before opening the door.
  • CHECK - ask for the caller's ID and don't be afraid to double-check it.
