Sharing a Car
What is Car Sharing?
Car Sharing is when two or more people share one car and travel together. Usually one of the people travelling is the owner of the vehicle and the others usually make a contribution towards the fuel costs.
Car Sharing (also known as lift sharing or ride sharing) enables more than one person to benefit from the convenience of travelling by car and helps to alleviate the problems of congestion and pollution.
Benefits of Car Sharing
- Less cars on the road
- Less congestion
- Less pollution
- Fewer parking problems
- More transport options
- Saves money by reducing transport costs
Issues to be Aware of
- Security
Identity checks need to be in place ensuring driver/passengers are genuine car sharers. Major car share companies provide guidelines to members but will not accept any liability for problems which may arise.
- The Law
Drivers of car share vehicles are not permitted to make a profit and the price a passenger must pay must be decided in advance and can include an appropriate amount towards wear and tear and depreciation.
