If you hit an adult pedestrian while driving at 30 mph, their survival chance is 80%, but if you hit them at 40 mph, their chance of dying rises to 90%.
Road accidents are the main cause of accidental death in Britain and in Surrey. Last year 60 people died in road traffic accidents in Surrey alone.
In 2007, a total of 6,113 people were reported as injured in road collisions in Surrey, 529 of whom were seriously injured and 60 killed.
A speed of 40 mph might not seem very much when sitting behind the wheel, but it will take the length of four buses to come to a standstill. For a pedestrian standing half that distance in front of you, this is not good news.
For parents, make sure your children are aware of the dangers and remind them to |Stop, Look and Listen. It sounds obvious but it could save their life.
