We Are What you Do - Fit smoke alarms

smoke alarmsIn 2003, 447 people died in accidental fires in the home and more than three quarters of these deaths were in properties without a smoke alarm.

Most fatal fires occur while people are sleeping. Smoke produced in a fire does not wake people but rather puts them into a deeper sleep.

Properly installed smoke alarms will react early to smoke and will give the precious minutes for you to evacuate your family safely.

Statistics show that you are twice as likely to die in a fire at home if you don't have smoke alarms.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service offers a free Home Risk Assessment as part of their drive to reduce the number of fires in the county. This will involve a visit from your local fire station using a simple questionnaire. They will identify potential problems and give you guidance on how to stay safe.

This free service can reduce the risk of fires and ultimately save the lives of you and your family.

To arrange for a visit, please call Surrey Fire and Rescue Service freephone on 0800 085 0767 |or fill in an on-line request form on their website.

You may even be entitled to free smoke alarms, however if you are not they can be purchased for as little as £5. What a small price to pay to protect you and your family. As well as having smoke alarms it is important that they are correctly fitted and located, and have a working battery.
