fit energy saving lightbulbs On the face of it energy saving light bulbs may not seem cheap. However, for each light bulb it will save you on average £7 a year on electricity bill. Okay, £7 does seem so much but for an average family home that's about £70 a year and electricity is not getting cheaper!

An energy saving light bulb also lasts about 12 times longer than a traditional light bulb.

An energy saving light bulbs work in the same way as fluorescent lights. An electric current passes through gas in a tube, making the tube's coating glow brightly, whereas traditional bulbs waste a lot of their energy by turning it into heat.

Other energy saving tips are:

Turning your thermostat down by 1ºC could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent and save you around £30 per year.
Is your water too hot? Your cylinder thermostat shouldn't need to be set higher than 60ºC/140ºF.
Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
If you're not filling up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, use the half-load or economy programme.
Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you're using an electric kettle).
