Our service is better known by the two main taxes we collect: Council Tax and Business Rates. We are a team of 20 officers.
We are the (joint 2nd) largest local taxation office in Surrey, in terms of number of properties we bill and the amounts we collect. We collect your Council Tax on behalf of Surrey County Council and Surrey Police, so that you pay one organisation instead of three. However we only keep about 13% of the money we collect to use for the services we provide our residents (such as Town Planning, Community Support Services, Refuse and Recycling, Parking, Parks and Commons etc.). About 73% goes to Surrey County Council for the provision of their services (Education, Roads etc...) while the rest goes to Surrey Police (about 14%). We have put together a diagram to summarise |where the money comes from and how we spend it.
Most of our application forms (for example, moving home, discounts, business rate relief) can be completed on line. For your convenience, you can also pay your Council Tax or Business Rates online as well.
We have held a Chartermark award for high customer standards continuously since 1996. The government publishes a league table on collection performance in June each year and we always feature in the top 5% in the country for Council Tax collection.
