Burglar Alarms

Image of a ringing intruder alarm A common feature of residential and commercial properties is the burglar alarm - located either inside the premises or on an external wall. Although good for security, when they malfunction they cease to be a benefit and become a nuisance.

I'm being disturbed by an alarm, what should I do?

You should contact:

the |Environmental Health & Licensing Division (during normal working hours)
|Out of Hours service (if at night, over the weekend or a Bank Holiday)
Please note: this service will not be able to disconnect commercial alarms.

I'm installing an alarm, what should I do?

If you install an alarm you are advised to ensure that:

it meets BS4737 for the installation, operation and maintenance of the alarm
it has a 20 minute cut-off device fitted
you notify the Environmental Health & Licensing Division the |name, address and telephone number of at least two keyholders.

It is not a legal requirement to register keyholders with the Council, however, a voluntary scheme exists for us to hold such details. Alternatively, you can use the SurPol scheme. This is endorsed by the Surrey Police and run by an independent company who do make an annual charge for keeping details on their database. The Council can access the SurPol system so it is not necessary to register with both.
