Vehicle Emission Testing

The Council, the |Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (previously known as the Vehicle Inspectorate) and the Police conduct joint roadside checks of vehicles in Elmbridge.

Any vehicle can be stopped and exhaust emissions checked on the spot.

Car with exhaust fumes The purpose of checks:

to reduce pollution from vehicles
to take the worst polluting vehicles off the road
to raise awareness of the value of regular vehicle maintenance.

What happens if my vehicle fails the test?

You will be given 14 days to repair or adjust the vehicle and have it retested as part of an MOT test.
If you don't carry out the work and get the vehicle retested you can be prosecuted and fined.

Note: If the roadside test shows that you have not maintained the vehicle properly e.g. a blown exhaust or defective suspension - you can be prosecuted and fined.

Don't rely on your annual MOT test!

Your vehicle should be roadworthy and comply with exhaust emission standards 365 days of the year.
