Esher Conservation Area

Character Appraisal and Management Proposal Document for the Esher Conservation Area

A conservation area is defined as "An area of special interest the character and appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance " The document provides written definition, analysis and appraisal of what makes an individual area special and identifies actions for protection and improvement.

The consultation document was created through collaborative working by the Esher Conservation Area Working Group. Community involvement has been key to this process and the Working Group has identified many aspects and issues that have been incorporated into the document. The Working Group included volunteers from the local area and representatives from historical, amenity and conservation societies working with officers from Elmbridge. The Paul Drury Partnership was appointed as heritage consultants to facilitate the project, organise training workshops and co-ordinate and produce the documents.

Following a six-week public consultation, the final document was considered and endorsed by the Elmbridge Borough Council Planning Committee on 19 February 2008 and by a meeting of full Council on 27 February 2008. The Council also confirmed three extensions to the existing conservtion area (see link to map below). The final document will be used by planners and the local community as a basis for understanding the area, informing decision making, monitoring and management. It will be made available to view on this website and in printed form, but in the meantime, the consultation document is available to view in PD format using the links below.
