A very major part of the Town Planning Division activities is devoted to assessing planning applications in order to regulate the development and use of land in the public interest.
Town planning legislation is complicated and often it can be confusing - particularly as to whether permission is necessary or not. To assist those contemplating development, small or large, the Council has provided a very full range of detailed guidance leaflets which are available at the Civic Centre or can be requested below. In addition, staff in the Development Control Section will always be prepared to assist on procedures and policies. Ideally though this should be done by making a prior appointment or by making a written request.
Informal consultation with planning officers prior to submitting an application can reduce the need for revised plans once the application is submitted and, thus, can save time. Please remember that all information and advice is given in an effort to be helpful, but must be without prejudice to any formal decision on the application. Also it is prudent to seek professional advice, particularly that of an architect or surveyor.
The Borough is divided into 3 areas covered by their own Development Control teams:-

East
Claygate, Esher, Hinchley Wood, Long Ditton, Oxshott, Stoke, Thames Ditton, Weston Green
North
Hersham, Walton, West Molesey, East Molesey
West
Cobham, Oatlands Park, St. Georges Hill, Brooklands, Weybridge
