Caring for someone with a memory loss condition can be very demanding. When you're caring for someone with dementia, it can be easy to ignore your own needs and wellbeing. According to the 2011 census there are a total of 11,631 carers in Elmbridge and 791 carers aged 65 plus provide more than 50 hours care per week. It is anticipated that these figures will continue to rise in line with national trends.
What support is available for carers in Elmbridge?
Set up 30 years ago by Elmbridge Borough Council, Elmbridge Relief Care is supporting carers by offering two key respite services; these are the Sitting Service and Specialist Day Care Groups. The Sitting Service provides person centred care in the home or to a place of interest within Elmbridge. The Specialist Day Care Groups provide social contact and stimulation in a community environment. Both services allow carers to take a break.
Carers often feel lonely, isolated and depressed through their caring role. Elmbridge Relief Care offers many services that provide carers with support, relevant training, social engagement and various other activities that allow carers to continue their caring role more rested and better informed.
We have received some very positive feedback regarding the Elmbridge Relief Carers Scheme from residents that have benefited from using the service:
"As the service has been operating for so long, experienced staff are able to provide a high level of care which is what we all want for our family members"
"This service has been a lifeline to me and the person I care for"
"Thank you for all your help last year. Your services were very valuable to me and my family in caring for my husband"
Councillor Mrs Ruth Lyon the Portfolio Holder for Social Affairs reinforces the benefit of using the Relief Care Services;
"There is clear evidence that Elmbridge has many active carers and the majority of them are older people themselves. By supporting carers this service also supports the cared for and the extended family. We have been operating this service for over 25 years and have many experienced staff who are able to provide a high level of care which is what we all want for our family members".
