Christmas tree recycling

Recycle your Christmas tree on Saturday morning, 7 January, at Garsons Garden Centre, Winterdown Road, Esher KT10 8LS.

Alternatively, our garden waste customers can recycle their Christmas tree in the brown lid garden waste bin. Just make sure it is cut up and the lid of the bin is closed.

Bin collections

Bin collections for the week commencing Monday 26 December will be made 1 day later than normal. Please make sure you have your bin out by 7am. From Monday 2 January your collection day is back to normal.

Should bad weather disrupt collections over the festive period please keep your refuse/recycling bins out. We will try to collect any missed bins as soon as we can. You can check our website and Twitter feed @elmbridgebc for up-to-date information. 

Community support services

  • Meals on Wheels service - the seven days a week hot Meals on Wheels service will continue to operate throughout the Christmas and new year period with a special service provided on Christmas Day. Customers will be contacted to confirm their meal requirements.
  • Community alarm will be monitored and emergencies will be responded to throughout the Christmas period.
  • Community transport will operate as normal for Centres, except on Christmas Bank Holiday days. All other services will not run between Christmas and New Year.
  • Relief Carers Scheme will operate their range of services as normal with the exception of bank holidays (although the Relief Care Support line will operate throughout the Christmas holiday). Specialist groups will operate over the Christmas period based on the requirements of carers.

Centres for the Community

All Centres are closed 26 and 27 December 2016 and 2 January 2017.

  • 23 December 2016 - Claygate, Hersham and Walton-on-Thames will close at 2pm, Cobham at 2.30pm, Molesey at 1.30pm and Weybridge at 4.30pm.
  •  28 December 2016 - Cobham, Hersham and Walton-on-Thames Centres will be open. All other centres are closed.
  •  29 December 2016 - All centres open.
  •  30 December 2016 - Claygate, Hersham and Walton-on-Thames will close at 2pm, Molesey at 1.30pm, Cobham at 2.30pm and Weybridge at 4.30pm.
  •  31 December 2016 – Hersham will be open 10am to 1pm.
  •  3 January 2017 - All centres re-open, except Thames Ditton which opens on 5 January.

Housing options

From 4.45pm on 23 December through to 8.45am on 29 December and from 4.45pm on 30 December through to 8.45am on 3 January 2017, anyone who is made homeless and has nowhere to stay that night should use the following contact number 0300 123 7719.  

Public halls

Elmbridge public halls will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Opening times outside these are subject to demand/bookings. 


Elmbridge cemeteries are open to visitors throughout the year between the hours of 9am and 8pm, or half an hour before sunset, whichever is the earlier. 

The Cemeteries Office, based at the Civic Centre, will be open for enquiries between 8.45am and 5pm up to and including Friday 23 December 2016 and will resume on Thursday 29 December 2016. The Cemeteries Office will also be closed on Monday 2 January 2017.

  • Christmas Day 25 December: Closed

  • Monday 26 December and Tuesday 27 December: 9am - 4.30pm 

  • Wednesday 28 December to 1 January: 7.30am - 4.30pm 

  • Monday 2 January: 9am - 4.30pm 

  • Tuesday 3 January: 7.30am - 4.30pm 

Civic Centre

Civic Centre is closed: Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 December 2016 (inclusive) and 2 January 2017.

Car parks

Look out for free car parking in Council-run town and village car parks on Saturdays leading up to Christmas. 

All Council car parks will be open to the public over the holiday period. Charges will not apply in all Council-run town and village car parks on: Sunday 25 to Tuesday 27 December 2016 (inclusive) and Sunday 1 to Monday 2 January 2017 (inclusive).

Christmas lights

Elmbridge Borough Council oversee the installation of the Christmas Lights in the following areas.

  •  East Molesey

  • West Molesey

  • Walton on Thames

  • Hersham

  • Oxshott

  • Weybridge

  • Oatlands

All other installations are managed locally through the various Business Guild’s within those areas.
