Elmbridge Borough Council is proudly independent this summer as we celebrated and promoted our great local independent businesses with our Independent Retail Awards.
The awards are now in their 5th year, with residents voting for their favourite local independents across July in six categories. There was a record number of votes cast for shops, cafes, restaurants and service retailers across the Borough.
The overall winner crowned the Best Independent Retailer in Elmbridge was Café Noir based at Thames Ditton station, with Paull’s Fruit and Veg in Thames Ditton and Rowena in Weybridge retaining their awards for Best Deli or Grocer and Best for Fashion.
The feedback on all the winning independents was overwhelmingly positive with Alaa Halbooby who runs Café Noir recognised by voters:
"Cafe Noir is more than just a station cafe but a meeting place for the community. Alaa Halbooby who runs Cafe Noir brightens up the station in so many ways - he makes the best latte for miles - but always takes the time to chat to commuters and visitors alike, he is a fantastic ambassador for Thames Ditton and for Thames Ditton Station."
Councillor Mary Marshall, Portfolio Holder for Corporate and Community Development said;
"There has been a real buzz across our high streets this summer. It’s great to see so many residents voting for their favourite local independents."
“The retail awards build on the continued growing support for our unique local high streets which includes free parking offers on Saturday mornings that have delivered over 19,000 hours of free parking for residents. Our masterclasses and business grant scheme have helped independent businesses with over £650,000 in funding to date.”
