Hersham Village Hall and Hersham Centre

22 June 2017

Essential information for users of Hersham Village Hall and Hersham Centre for the Community

• Please note this release updates the information on the Council website from 20 June

As a result of a condition survey of both Hersham Village Hall and the adjoining Hersham Centre for the Community, Elmbridge Borough Council needs to take decisive action surrounding these facilities to ensure the safety of our residents.

Hersham Village Hall

Effective immediately, Hersham Village Hall will close for the foreseeable future due to fire and safety concerns with the building. The Council  is assessing the implications of a condition survey and will bring forward plans to re-provide a facility as part of longer term plans for the site.

We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause but please be assured that we will do everything we can to find hirers suitable alternative facilities within the Borough.

If you are a user of the hall and would like to discuss alternative options please contact the Community Halls Bookings Officer on 01932 254750 or Liz Taylor, Leisure Facilities Manager for Elmbridge Borough Council on 01372 474580.

Hersham Centre for the Community

The Hersham Centre for the Community will close temporarily on 28 June, while we make fire safety improvements. The work is expected to take a maximum of 6 weeks and will commence at the beginning of July.

We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause but we will work to accommodate the members of the Hersham Centre for the Community throughout our other Centres for the Community.

If you are a member of the Hersham Centre for the Community and have any questions, please contact 01932 246267.

Councillor Stuart Selleck, Leader of Elmbridge Borough Council commented: “The closure of the hall is to be seen as a temporary situation as the Council assesses all the options available to provide community facilities in Hersham.”

He added: “Community Centres are important and essential to the fabric of our communities. We have seen from the success of the Molesey Centre for the Community, that our Centres are real community hubs providing the residents of the area not only with a variety of lifestyle activities but also offering support and friendship to the older and more vulnerable people in our community. We will work to ensure that we continue to offer facilities that make a real difference in our community.”

The safety of our residents is always of utmost importance to us. To this end, we regularly carry our condition surveys of our buildings. The condition survey conducted on the Hersham Village Hall and the Hersham Centre of the Community occurred as part our regular processes.

Both buildings have complex mechanical and electrical installations which are at the end of their useful life and as such have an impact on the fire integrity of the buildings.

We will bring forward plans in the Autumn to the relevant stakeholders to re-provide an enhanced facility as part of longer term plans for the Hersham Village Hall site.  In the meantime, work will commence to the Hersham Centre for the Community and it will reopen as soon as possible.

We apologise for the immediate nature of this decision but the safety of our residents has to be our primary focus
