Elmbridge Sports Awards

Elmbridge Sports Awards

The Elmbridge Sports Awards ceremony was held at the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse last Friday to celebrate the achievements, dedication, talent and hard-work of some of our localathletes, coaches and volunteers. They had been nominated by the community for their commitment to make Elmbridge an even more active and successful sporting borough.

The event was hosted by Cllr Barry Cheyne – Chairman of the Elmbridge Sports Council and sponsored by Sandown Park Racecourses, David J Archer Group of Companies, TGL Group, Active Surrey and places for People.

This year, hand-cyclist and Elmbridge resident Jonathan Bell was the special guest at the Awards ceremony. A former soldier, paralysed from the upper chest following life changing injuries sustained during military training before deployment in Bosnia, Jonathan, along with a number of other soldiers injured in the incident, discovered a love for cycling and have been raising money and awareness of the charity Blesma ever since. Blesma is an Armed Forces charity dedicated to assisting serving and ex-service men and women who have suffered loss of limbs or sight. This year, Jonathan led 75 veterans, most from his Regiment, on a l00 mile cycle ride across the South Yorkshire countryside and raised more than £31,000 for the charity. Jonathan gave an inspirational interview to Radio Jackie on the evening and left the audience in awe of his achievements.

They all are an inspiration to us all now and for the generations to come".

Cllr Janet Turner, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services said; “2017 has been such a fantastic year for sports with the opening of the new Xcel Sports Hub offering additional opportunities for residents to get involved in a variety of sporting activities. We are proud to have so many local athletes dedicated to reach high levels of performance. We must remember that their goals could not be met without the hard work, dedication, and skill of the coaches and sports clubs in the Borough”.
